Oodle’s Marketplace has always promoted reusing items. Today we’ve made the process a lot easier. Along with our partners Recology and Earth911, Oodle is launching freecycling in our Marketplace on Facebook and Oodle.com.
Freecycling is a movement to help reduce the flow of waste to landfills by encouraging neighbors to give unwanted but reusable household items to each other instead of throwing them away. Our Marketplace now enables neighbors to join together in a local online community called a FreeCircle where they can offer items to each other, search among available items, or request something specific. And with the Marketplace mobile app, you can photograph an item with your phone and offer it to your neighbors in under a minute.
Oodle is partnering with Recology and Earth911 to promote FreeCircles. Earth911 provides an online directory of recycling centers and will promote FreeCircles on its website and to its nationwide network of recycling managers. Recology, which provides recycling services to residential and commercial customers in the San Francisco Bay Area and over 80 municipalities in the West, will promote freecycling to its customers and will also help administer more than a dozen local FreeCircles.
Oodle is initially launching FreeCircles in 25 cities around the San Francisco Bay Area — including Palo Alto, Burlingame, and Mountain View. Oodle will expand the program in the future to include other cities across the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. To find and join your local FreeCircle, go to http://facebook.oodle.com/freecircles . To find out more about FreeCircles, take a tour.
Oodle also introduced tools to help the moderators of existing Freecycle, ReUseIt, FullCircles, Freegle, and other freecycling groups on Yahoo! Groups. They can now grow their membership using the new “Promote My Group” feature on Marketplace. This functionality publicizes the group’s listings to local Marketplace users, customers of Recology, and users of Earth911’s directory. Promote My Group is free and takes just a few minutes to set up. To find out more about Promote My Group, go to http://blog.oodle.com/promote-my-group .
We hope that you enjoy using FreeCircles. Together we can be creative, resourceful and economical while making a significant positive impact on the environment!
Today we’re launching our Marketplace application for the iPhone. It makes classifieds simple and social for the Marketplace on Facebook and Oodle, as well as Craigslist. Download it and let us know what you think.
With the Marketplace app you can:
- Post listings in seconds. Just snap a picture and your listing is posted to Oodle and Facebook Marketplace. Whether you have a garage full of stuff or are subletting your apartment, now your friends and the millions of users searching the Oodle and Facebook Marketplaces can find what you are selling or giving away.
- See what friends are posting. Never miss out on the action. Quickly see who might be giving away tickets or looking for a baby stroller – and respond right away.
- Browse nearby listings. Looking for something specific nearby? Browse local listings, such as apartments that are available in your neighborhood.
Marketplace is open for business anytime, anywhere on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Our Android version will be ready in September.
At Oodle, we believe in the phrase “power to the people.” We’re sort of like John Lennon that way. So what do the people like? Mobile phones. In fact, in many countries, there are more mobile phones than people.
As the leading classifieds network and as fans of John Lennon (before the Yoko Ono days or maybe during the Yoko Ono days, after Abbey Road but before “Cold Turkey”) and definitely fans of Gandhi or the Dalai Lama, we asked ourselves “What can we do that will change the world as we know it?” I’m glad we asked.
See, today, we here at the Oodle UK offices began an experiment with the next phase of classifieds – mobile classifieds. We’re launching this service with one of our partners, Magic Radio. The service, which has been developed using technology through Mobiya, allows users to post ads directly into the Oodle network via their mobile phones.
If you live in the UK, all you do is take a picture of your item for sale, describe it, and then text the info to 66121. You’ll get a couple more texts asking for your location and keywords to better describe the ad. And voila – we publish it to the web (and it reaches over 1 million potential monthly buyers in a snap).
The process is both easy and cheap – you’re only charged normal SMS rates to post an ad. If someone replies to your ad, they’re charged .25p. If you get a lead and want to accept it, you’ll be charged .25p. An easy sale for only about .50p.
Try out the service this Friday, and listen to Magic FM for the accompanying advert. Also, check out: http://magic.mobiya.co.uk/docs/66121FreeAds.php for more info.
